Making the Right Choices Today to Shape a Better Tomorrow

At Balfour Beatty, sustainability is one of our core values. It is integral to how we’re building new futures for our industry, communities, the environment and for all our stakeholders.

To safeguard the natural resources and communities on which our operations and those of many others depend, our sustainability strategy encompasses five focus areas: climate change, nature positive, resource efficiency, supply chain integrity, community engagement and employee diversity equity & inclusion.

Our teammates are passionate about leaving a positive legacy for the people we work with, the communities we work in and the world in which we operate. As we collaborate with our supply chain partners, clients and communities to ensure our choices are sustainable, we will remain unwavering in our responsibility to protect and enhance our planet and society and continue to turn words into actions.

Mitigate and adapt to climate change

  • Reduction in carbon emissions from direct operations and supply chain
  • Low carbon alternatives offered to clients
  • One tree planted for every employee annually
  • Intentional reduction in business travel
  • Elimination of single-use plastics
  • Electric vehicle fleet

Protect and enhance the natural environment

From highways to hospitals, construction underpins almost every aspect of our daily lives. But construction can have a devastating impact on the natural environment and our vital ecosystems.

By capturing and understanding our environmental impact across our supply chain, we will further embed a positive reporting culture for environmental incidents and implement the right safeguards to protect our natural environments.

Deliver resource efficiency through our operations

Construction creates an estimated one-third of the world’s waste and extracts nearly 40 billion tons of raw materials from the planet each year.

Through the implementation of design-driven circular economy principles, we are taking actions to go beyond managing the waste we produce to achieve zero avoidable waste.

Some of the ways we are actively reducing our carbon footprint include:

  • Increase usage of sustainable products and materials
  • Provide clients sustainable material options and alternatives
  • Divert 70% of all jobsite-generated waste to recycled facilities
  • Increase prefabrication opportunities
Resource Efficiency

Empower sustainable suppliers and champion ethical practices

Our supply chain partners are crucial to delivering work sustainably.

To empower sustainable suppliers and champion ethical practices, we are ensuring the way we buy is inclusive and are forming collaborative relationships with our supply chain partners to reduce carbon emissions, responsibly source materials and protect human rights.

Supply Chain Integrity

Deliver long-lasting social benefits for the communities we operate in

Our impact goes beyond the projects we are privileged to build and into the heart of the communities where our teammates live, work and play. From spearheading service projects with local charities to creating mentorship programs for Minority, Women, and Small Business Enterprises (MWSBEs) and more, our community roots run deep.

Some of the ways we are building new futures for our local communities include:

  • National and local charitable contributions and involvement
  • Grass roots employee volunteerism efforts
  • Strengthen 'earn and learn' positions
  • Continue to be a great place to work and generate local employment opportunities
  • Local outreach opportunities that improve our industry partnering with local organizations and clients
  • Focus on mental wellbeing and physical wellbeing of our employees

Create a diverse and inclusive organization

As an inclusive, people-first organization, we know that it is our employees’ unique skills and capabilities that set us apart from the competition. By fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture and organization, we aim to be the employer of choice for high-quality, talented individuals and harness their creativity and innovation to make us a better and stronger business.

Some of the ways we are cultivating employee diversity, equity and inclusion include:

  • DE&I Executive Steering Committee
  • National Affinity Group Council
  • Six employee affinity groups
  • Diversity recruitment and retention plan
  • Culture of CARE pledge
  • Allyship training
  • Annual “Together Allies” Summit in October
  • Right to Respect program
